BRIEF
HISTORY OF THE PRACTICE
A J Cronin’s book “The Citadel” describes the efforts of a young doctor who comes down from Wales to set up as a GP in Paddington. It is based on the years that Dr Cronin lived and worked at 152 Westbourne Grove.
In 1929 he decided that the success of “The Citadel” and of “The Stars Look Down” justified a career in writing and, in fact, his novels were used as the basis for “Dr Finlay’s Casebook”.
The doctor who bought the practice from Dr Cronin was Dr Z (Jack) Green. He was joined in 1950 by his son, Melvin, who continued single-handed when his father retired. In 1971 he moved the practice to 50 St Petersburgh Place.
By 1972 the workload had increased and Melvin Green took on as his partner Richard Stone. Rapid expansion included transfer of the patients of Dr de Rynck, who retired in 1979 from his surgery round the corner. This was also the year in which Michael Cornell became a partner, and in 1981 Sheena Buchanan-Barrow came in as a fourth doctor. Clearly the house in St Petersburgh Place was too small for four doctors, who by now were working with a nurse, a manager and several receptionists. On the retirement of Melvin Green in 1984 the practice moved up the road to 2 Garway Road.
Dr Stone retired in December 1991. Three additional doctors joined the practice as partners during 1992/1993. Dr Eric Huang replaced Dr P Stables in January 1998. Dr Jedth Phornnarit later replaced Dr Heggessey. Dr Michael Cornell retired from the practice in February 2008. Due to Dr Cornell's retirement we had to move, and were found premises by the Primary Care Trust (PCT) at the Hallfield Clinic. This move took place in March 2008. We were joined in February 2008 by Dr Robin Harlow. The practice now consists of five doctors and two nurses.
